We started a new arc, “By Hand”. In this arc, we’re exploring a variety of things that people do, make, and create with their hands.
On the first day we traced a projection of a skeleton hand, we made a room to do shadow puppets using our hands, had a Sign Language expert come to share with us, and our Collaborators were mute for the first half of the day and only communicated to us with hand gestures.
Since then we have done tons of other activities:
-made stuff with clay
-made plaster handprints: I did a plaster cast of my handprint in clay.
-a guy with a robotic hand visited us: He was paragliding and he didn’t see the power line and unfortunately got his arm electrocuted. He got it amputated and now has several different sets of arms and hands.
-visited a potter and watched him make a bowl, a cup, and a plate
-fixed a bicycle: Our hands were filthy afterwards.
-made play dough
-learned to knit: I’m knitting a scarf right now!
-visited a wood carver’s house and studio: I’ll do a separate blog post about this because it was so amazing.
So far in this arc, I realize how much stuff is made by machines and I wish more stuff would be made by hand.
